In 1923, Adolphe Leroy and Rose Merlin, associates in private and business life, open a business of American surplus. Strengthened by this 1st success, they decide to sell DIY products and supplies at moderate prices.
In 1960, the firm is named Leroy Merlin. It becomes a precursor, as it is the first company to create a free delivery service.
In 1966, in the North of France, the 1st self-service DIY store opens. The domestic market develops and LM stores multiply.
In 1979, a partnership agreement is signed with the Auchan group, who finally buy out the company.
This decisive step will lead LM to develop new store concepts and to become a world leader in creating life styles.
In 1989, LM sets up in Spain and its success is outstanding beyond expectations . LM is renowned today in Spain and leads the Spanish market with 28 stores.
In 1996, LM sets up in Poland.
In 1998, it’s the 1st opening in Brazil, where LM has now 11 stores.
In 2003 Portugal opens its first Leroy Merlin store.
2004 sees the opening of the first stores in Russia and People’s Republic of China.
In 2005, launching in Greece.
